Jessica Smith, a former star of the MTV reality television show "Laguna Beach:
The Real Orange County," was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after an auto accident on the northbound San Diego (I-5) Freeway on Monday, according to a news report in The Orange County Register.
Smith, 19, of Laguna Beach, crashed a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle into the back of a 2003 Acura MDX after she couldn’t slow down in time, a California Highway Patrol report said. The CHP report said that her level of intoxication, unsafe speeds and wet roadways were conditions that led to the crash.
The driver of the Acura, Roy Hernandez of Lake Forest, sustained minor injuries in the collision, CHP officials said. A single passenger in Smith’s car, Lindsay Cooper, 20, of Isla Vista, also suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to reports.
Smith was released on a $100,000 bail.
Smith was one of two cast members on the reality series to be featured in all three seasons, playing a primary starring role in season two in 2005. As of 2006, she was attending Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, according to her travel blog, letsgojessica.blogspot.com.
CHP did not release blood alcohol levels. Actors getting in DUI auto accidents or being cited for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, is almost a routine matter these days. No one thinks twice about it and takes it for granted.
But driving under the influence is a crime, legally and an irresponsible act, morally. You are not only putting yourself in danger, but putting other lives in danger.
If you’re drunk or just a little intoxicated, take a cab! You’ll spend a few extra bucks, but you won’t spend any time in jail. A cab is cheaper then bail and a lot quicker. You’ll also be saving lives, maybe your own.
If you or a loved one has been injured by a drunk or negligent driver, contact me. I have an attitude about intoxicated drivers
